What are “Subscription upsells” and the “Cart upsell”?
Subscription upsells help convert one-time purchases into subscriptions at checkout. The Cart upsell shows a small widget in the cart when an item that has an active subscription rule is added as a one-time purchase; customers can tick a box to switch that item to a subscription and pick a delivery frequency.
Note: The cart widget appears only when a product with an active subscription rule is in the cart as a one-time purchase.
Cart upsell also has Cart Modal functionality, which supports subscription purchases and ensures that customers are fully aware of their options before completing the checkout process.
Step 1: Enable and place the Cart upsell
Click the this page hyper link in the notice and verify the widget placement for desktop and mobile. (Ensure it’s injected in your cart/cart drawer so customers can see it.)
Step 2: Configure Cart widget text
You can customize the labels customers see in the cart:
Checkbox label for subscriptions with discount available
Use:Subscribe & save {{discount}}
The
{{discount}}
variable automatically shows the discount from the chosen subscription frequency.Checkbox label for subscriptions without discount
‘New price:’ label
‘Update item’ button
A live Preview on the right shows how the widget will look (checkbox, Delivery frequency selector, and New price).
This is how it looks in your store:
Step 3: Cart - Confirmation modal (Optional)
To prevent accidental one-time checkouts after ticking the subscribe box:
Enable Show subscription confirmation modal.
Customize:
Modal title (e.g.,
Cart changes
)Modal content (e.g.,
Some products in the cart have not been updated to subscriptions.
)‘Update and proceed to checkout’ button text
‘Proceed without updating’ button text
If you want to remove the modal later, untick the option or click Reset to default settings.
The Cart Modal feature comes into play when a customer activates the subscription option (for example, by checking a subscription checkbox) but doesn’t update the product to the subscription model before proceeding to checkout. In this case, RecurrinGo displays a modal pop-up with a clear choice: proceed with a subscription or continue with a one-time purchase.
The cart modal looks like this in your store:
Step 4: Save, test, and publish
Click Save.
In your storefront, add a product with a subscription rule to the cart as one-time and confirm the upsell appears.
Test both flows: with and without discount; with the confirmation modal enabled/disabled.
How the Cart upsell works (customer view)
When the shopper adds an eligible product as a one-time item, the cart shows a Subscribe for auto-deliveries checkbox.
After checking it, they can select a Delivery frequency (e.g., 1 month) and see the New price (with any subscribe-and-save discount).
Clicking Update item converts the line item to a subscription.
